Building conversion, Hotel Premium Wellness Râmnicu Vâlcea

The project was developed during 2016-2017: Spiru Haret University wanted its headquarters in Râmnicu Vâlcea, a hilly balneal resort in central Romania, transformed into a wellness hotel and spa. We provided the measurement surveys and the feasibility study, coordinating structure, installation and construction engineering firms. The existing building was erected in the 1970s as office quarters for the designing department of the regional planning centre, its prefabricated concrete panels a trademark of the period’s architecture. In the late 1990s it was repartitioned in classrooms and extended with a metal – wood light top structure, hosting a conference hall. Its concrete beams and pillars structure required consolidation, while the top floor extension presented water infiltration and severe decay.

We proposed the following steps: consolidation of the existing structure, extension of the semi-basement with a swimming pool and spa facilities, addition of two new circulation shafts for both clients and service, removal of the top structure, addition of a new floor in metal structure, accessibility for disabled users. We also advised for the prefab modules and sun-blockers of the facades to be restored and maintained exposed, as witnesses and proof of the original architecture, while our own proposed new floor submitted to the same aesthetics of simplicity. The new Premium Wellness Hotel achieves the 4star standard.
